Mission Trip to Haiti in June

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission Team made up of volunteers from various churches. Age range: teenager to older adult in good health. You must agree to follow the UMVIM code of conduct and be tolerant of heat and humidity.

We will be supporting the Institute of Grace in their efforts to build and support a hospital in Merger, Haiti. For more details on the IOG see http://www.instituteofgrace.org/. They have requested that we do construction (electrical, flooring, painting, etc.), medical (clinic, help with the hospital that is currently starting up, especially nurse training), Bible School and feeding program for up to 300 children (stories, music, videos, games, crafts), and Adult education seminars (business, seminary, health).

June 20 – 27, 2012.

We will fly from DCA to MIA to PAP, catch a bus to Merger (west of Port-au-Prince 15 miles), and stay on site (think rustic camping – no reliable electricity, no AC, no screens in windows). We will have safe water, eat lots of rice and beans, and be lodging in a wing of the hospital with beds and mosquito netting. Security has not been a problem because we stay together and don’t bring valuables.

To support the people of Haiti through education, medical care and sharing Jesus.

At what cost: One week of your time, approximately $1100 of your money (should cover all expenses including airfare except for airport food and souvenirs), risk of loss of life or limb or personal safety or health (see the State Department’s website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1134.html).

I will be looking for firm commitments and a deposit of $600 per traveler by the 18th of April so that I can begin to purchase non-refundable airplane tickets. Once I have your deposit, I will buy your ticket. Once we know who will be on the team, we will assign out team responsibilities. The balance will be due by May 27th.

See the list below for who is planning to go. I am also happy to provide more information as requested. I have taken teams of 7 in 2008, 18 in 2009, 14 in 2010, and 13 in 2011 to work on this project.

Financial support is also greatly needed. We try to do most of our construction using local workers, giving them employment. Donations are charitable contributions (make checks out to St. Paul UMC and designate “Haiti Trip” or you can write the check to your church and have them send a check to St Paul UMC, at 11000 HG Trueman Rd, Lusby, MD 20657. All donations will be used for supplies or spent in Haiti unless specifically designated for a team member’s travel costs.
